An Unsilenced Survivor Story
"The thing I remember clearly is being held down by nurses, and watching another nurse forcibly insert a catheter as I screamed for my parents and begged her to stop. The thing I remember the most was her emotionless face and lack of acknowledgement. To this day I still have fears around sexual intimacy and experience pelvic floor dysfunction."
When I was 4 years old, I became incredibly sick and was taken to the hospital. I only have small bits of memory from being there, but the thing I remember clearly is being held down by nurses, and watching another nurse forcibly insert a catheter as I screamed for my parents and begged her to stop. The thing I remember the most was her emotionless face and lack of acknowledgement. They didn’t want to wait for me to need to urinate to check for a UTI, so they did this instead.
To this day I still have fears around sexual intimacy and experience pelvic floor dysfunction. I only had a doctor recently explain to me that this vcug test was the likely cause of it. I’m 26 years old, and at 4 this is the first clear memory I have from my life.
