An Unsilenced Survivor Story

I cried and clenched the bed because the catheter was so painful. I bled for a handful of days after and had such bad pain when I peed. It makes me feel better knowing this wasn’t just me being a “difficult child” and that others had issues with this procedure as well.

I’m currently in my 20s and vividly remember one of my many VCUG procedures. I don’t remember what age I got my first, but I do remember crying because the catheter was so uncomfortable and hurt going in. Then, I remember my nurse begging me to urinate on the table to get the images. She told me the table would make “silly noises” as I cried because I didn’t want to do it. I had this test done numerous times throughout my childhood because of kidney issues and frequent UTIs. I most recently had it done as a teen. I begged the nurses to do a different test and to not insert a catheter, but they said the test was necessary to see if my ureter was acting up again. I cried and clenched the bed because the catheter was so painful. The nurse eventually went to get some help and ended up using a smaller catheter size than what she was originally trying to insert. I bled for a handful of days after and had such bad pain when I peed. Catheters still make me uncomfortable as an adult. It makes me feel better knowing this wasn’t just me being a “difficult child” and that others had issues with this procedure as well.
