I had VUR when I was a toddler. It’s genetic in my family and many of my relatives have had it. I was really little, like 2 to 6 or so. Over those years, I went through VCUG many times. I have only two very strong memories surrounding it. One memory is the morning of vcug, not the first one for sure. I was awake early because of was scarred and I remember tracing the Winnie the Poo characters on my bedsheets with my finger while dreading the day ahead. The other memory is of being in a medical room, on a metal table and being cold and in pain. That’s it. I was too little to remember much else. While my vur cleared on its own as I got older, I still have lingering issues. Many common antibiotics don’t work on me from the medicine I took ever day for years. I have chronic UTIs and general urinary pain (though they swear there’s nothing wrong with me anymore). I have serious medical trauma resulting in me not seeking help since I feel I won’t be believed. I additionally have symptoms often associated with childhood sexual abuse although none happened (other then the vcug). I’m almost 30 and am only just realizing how much this procedure has effected me and my quality of life.
